Introduction to Soil Science / Introduction to Sorption and Ion Exchange

"Sorption is the process by which soil retains nutrients and contaminants. Absorption occurs when liquids and dissolved compounds move into pores or particles, while adsorption occurs when solutes adhere to particle surfaces. Sorption helps retain nutrients for plant use and keeps contaminants from moving into groundwater and streams."
