Introduction to Soil Science / Mineralogy

"Minerals provide the physical framework of soil, release nutrients as they weather, and supply surfaces for chemical adsorption. Mineral transformations can occur through hydration, hydrolysis, oxidation-reduction, carbonation, and other processes. Clay mineral weathering can alter cation exchange capacity, shrink-swell behavior, nutrient availability, and horizon development."
