Common Phyllosilicates
Introduction to Soil Science / Common Soil Phyllosilicates
"The common soil phyllosilicates, in increasing order of weathering, are mica or illite, vermiculite, smectite, and kaolinite. Mica has a 2:1 structure with potassium in a tightly closed interlayer and does not swell. Vermiculite and smectite have water-accessible interlayers and progressively greater swelling, while kaolinite has a 1:1 structure with no interlayer and does not swell."
