Weathering Change
Introduction to Soil Science / Common Soil Phyllosilicates
"As weathering proceeds from mica through vermiculite and smectite to kaolinite, permanent charge generally decreases. Swelling, surface area, and ion retention increase and then decrease across the sequence. These changes help explain why soils with different weathering histories have different nutrient-holding capacity, water behavior, and shrink-swell risks."
