Ion Exchange
Introduction to Soil Science / Introduction to Sorption and Ion Exchange
"Ion exchange is the rapid and reversible swapping of ions in solution with oppositely charged sites on soil surfaces. Cation exchange involves cations in solution exchanging with cations held on negatively charged surfaces, while anion exchange involves anions and positively charged surfaces. Common exchangeable ions include H+, Al3+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, NH4+, NO3−, SO42−, and Cl−."
