Introduction to Soil Science / Poorly Crystalline Silicate, Oxide, and Organic Colloids
"Poorly crystalline silicates are silicon-oxygen minerals with short-range order rather than extensive repeating crystal patterns. They commonly form from volcanic ash and include allophane and imogolite, which have sphere- or tube-shaped structures. These minerals retain substantial water and have significant pH-dependent charge, contributing to the fertility of volcanic-ash soils."
