How do appraisal and coping shape stress?

Health Education Health 100 Version 3 / Stress Is in the Eye of the Beholder

"Lazarus’s appraisal theory proposes that people first evaluate an event as a threat, challenge, or neutral situation and then assess whether they have adequate coping resources. If resources seem sufficient, the event may be experienced as a challenge; if they seem inadequate, the person may experience distress. Instrumental coping changes the problem, while emotion-focused coping changes the person’s physiological or emotional response when the stressor cannot be removed."
