Stratified Soils
Introduction to Soil Science / Water Flow in Soil
"Stratified soils contain abrupt changes in texture that can slow or redirect water flow. Water moving from a coarse layer into a fine layer slows and spreads out, while water moving from a fine layer into a coarse layer may remain in the fine layer until it becomes saturated. Strongly contrasting layers can form aquitards or aquicludes and create perched water tables."
