Introduction to Soil Science / Infiltration and Permeability
"Soils with favorable structure and connected macropores generally allow water to infiltrate and move more readily. Surface crusting, compaction, poor aggregation, and fine-textured barriers can reduce infiltration or permeability and increase runoff. Capillary forces from adhesion and cohesion can also move water through soil and are used in drainage technologies such as passive capillary drainage."
