Introduction to Soil Science / Soil Structure
"Granular structure consists of rounded aggregates with favorable pore space and is common in organic-rich A horizons. Platy structure has horizontal units, blocky structure is common in B horizons or cultivated A horizons, and prismatic structure has vertical units that can guide water and roots. Columnar structure develops when sodium affects prismatic structure, while massive or single-grained soil has little or no aggregation."
