Aeration Important

Introduction to Soil Science / Soil Aeration

"Plant roots require oxygen for aerobic respiration, and insufficient aeration can cause roots to suffocate and die. Aerobic microorganisms also need oxygen, so poor aeration slows decomposition and changes nutrient cycling, mineral reactions, greenhouse gas emissions, and soil development. Aeration generally decreases as soil moisture, depth, clay content, or landscape wetness increases."
