Flooding Affect
Introduction to Soil Science / Wetlands and Other Poorly-Aerated Soils
"Flooding fills soil pores with water, restricts oxygen, and causes microbes to use progressively less efficient electron acceptors. Organic matter decomposition slows, while reduced forms of metals such as iron and manganese become more soluble and can reach toxic concentrations. Denitrification can remove plant-available nitrogen and produce gases such as nitric oxide and nitrous oxide."
