Wetlands Important
Introduction to Soil Science / Wetlands and Other Poorly-Aerated Soils
"Wetlands support diverse and often endangered plants and animals, filter sediment and phosphorus, and remove nitrate through denitrification. Their hydric soils accumulate large amounts of organic carbon, making wetlands important for climate regulation. Once drained or severely disturbed, wetland functions may recover over decades, but soil organic matter and original biodiversity can take centuries or millennia to return."
