Oxidation Reduction

Introduction to Soil Science / Soil Redox Processes

"Oxidation occurs when an element loses electrons, while reduction occurs when an element gains electrons. These reactions occur together because electrons transferred during oxidation must be accepted by another substance. Iron and manganese commonly lose electrons, while oxygen and nitrate commonly act as oxidizing agents that accept electrons."
