Redox Ladder
Introduction to Soil Science / Soil Redox Processes
"The redox ladder ranks electron acceptors according to the energy yielded during microbial respiration. Microbes generally use oxygen first, followed by nitrate, manganese, iron, sulfate, and carbon dioxide as oxygen becomes unavailable. Energy yield decreases down the ladder, so organisms using lower-ranked acceptors generally grow more slowly."
