Soil Redox
Introduction to Soil Science / Soil Redox Processes
"Gray or gleyed colors indicate reduced, oxygen-poor conditions that are commonly associated with saturation. Reduced iron can move through soil until it encounters oxygen, where it oxidizes and forms red concentrations. Redox depletions and concentrations preserve evidence of fluctuating water tables and recurring wetness even during dry periods."
